- AK> : people should be warned when talking us modems out of the us for
- AK> other : countries!
-
- Nonsense. Reps, journalists and business people do it all the time.
- Not to mention tourists, people on active service overseas...
-
- AK> every other modem company will give you the same
- AK> answer. its : illegal to use non approved modems in other countries.
-
- This _was_ true. But within the EEA understand there's been a recent
- ruling that country specific type approval has been held to be an
- artificial barrier to trade. Not sure which euro-countries have yet
- adopted this into their own domestic legislation; yet the intention is
- clear: a modem type approved for one EAA country may be used in any
- other (subject to correct mains voltage for an external and proper
- 'phone cord of course :-)
-
- AK> its a crime..
-
- It is not. Not all illegalities violate criminal (penal) code. Get any
- parking tickets this last month? Are you now a criminal?
-
- AK> and the punishment if you get caught varies to where
- AK> you are..
-
- No country AFAIK has "The Modem Police". Only if you cause damage to the
- 'phone system you connect to will you be held liable. And only then if the
- device you connect is not type approved for the country you're in
-
- AK> and : if any modem company helped you, they could loose thier
- AK> permission : to sell modems in that country.
-
- Total cobblers! Electronic parts (like any other parts) are subject to
- import controls between _countries_ UK couldn't suddenly "ban" just USRs
- being imported. Nor could US suddenly just "ban" ZyXel simply coz they were
- from that particular maker. If nothing else the GATT (General Agreement
- on Tariffs and Trade) sees to it
-
- AK> What if you buy in the States exactly the same model that is approved
- AK> in your country?
-
- If you buy ZoomV34 Worldwide series you'll find up to 20
- countries' configs listed selectable from a *NC??? init. If it's got a
- type approvals' sticker for one euro-country then please see above (EAA
- Equipment to which these regulations apply is governed by EEA-wide [European
- Economic Area = EU + Norway, Iceland and Leichtenstein] standards and
- approvals.
-
- If you buy a US-only-approved modem in an EAA country it should have with
- it a notice prohibiting its connection to the PSTN. The manufacturer,
- importer, and retailer is then covered
-
- This makes the position of modem makers that only supply update
- configuration files which will only work on _one_ countries' particular
- modem (from the same maker yet!) rather interesting!
-
- And the subject line of this thread perhaps applicable?
